The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
