Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
